Fiscal Responsibility & National Debt
Stop Borrowing Against the Future
The United States is carrying a level of debt that cannot be ignored, postponed, or explained away.
This is not a distant problem. It is a present reality.
Every year, Washington spends more than it takes in, adds to the national debt, and shifts the cost onto future generations. Interest payments alone are consuming a growing share of the federal budget—crowding out priorities and limiting flexibility.
A government that cannot control its finances cannot protect its future.
I am running to restore fiscal responsibility before the problem becomes unmanageable.
What Is Driving the Problem?
Chronic Deficit Spending
Washington operates on permanent deficits, treating overspending as normal. Short-term political incentives outweigh long-term financial stability.
Lack of Budget Discipline
Omnibus bills, continuing resolutions, and last-minute deals reduce transparency and avoid accountability. Spending decisions are often made without full scrutiny.
Rising Interest Burden
As debt grows, so do interest payments. This creates a cycle where more of the budget goes to servicing debt instead of funding essential functions.
Expansion Beyond Constitutional Scope
As federal responsibilities expand beyond their intended limits, so does spending. Programs accumulate without clear evaluation or sunset.
Why It Matters to Idaho
Idaho families understand the importance of living within their means.
When Washington fails to do the same, the consequences show up everywhere:
Inflation that reduces purchasing power
Higher interest rates that affect mortgages and business loans
Reduced economic stability
A growing burden on future generations
Fiscal irresponsibility at the federal level becomes financial pressure at the household level.
My Approach
Fiscal responsibility requires more than rhetoric. It requires discipline, transparency, and a willingness to make difficult decisions.
The federal government must:
- Spend within its means
- Prioritize core responsibilities
- Eliminate waste and duplication
- Return to its constitutional scope
This is not about cutting for the sake of cutting. It is about restoring balance and sustainability.
Policy Priorities
Enforce Real Budget Discipline
I will oppose spending practices that avoid accountability and support reforms that require transparent, deliberate budgeting.
Reduce Federal Spending
Programs should be evaluated for effectiveness and constitutional authority. Wasteful and duplicative spending should be eliminated.
Address the Debt Trajectory
The growth of the national debt must be slowed and eventually stabilized through spending restraint and responsible policy.
Increase Transparency
The public should be able to see where money is going and why. Budgeting should not be hidden behind complex or rushed processes.
Restore Constitutional Scope
Limiting the role of the federal government reduces long-term spending pressure and improves accountability.
Day One Priorities
In the Senate, I will support legislation and oversight to:
- Oppose omnibus spending packages that bypass proper review
- Increase transparency in federal budgeting and expenditures
- Audit federal programs for waste, duplication, and inefficiency
- Challenge spending that exceeds constitutional authority
- Promote reforms that restore accountability in the budget process
Bottom Line
Debt is not abstract. It is a claim on the future.
When Washington borrows without limits, it limits the opportunities of the next generation.
Fiscal responsibility is not optional.
It is the foundation of a stable, sovereign nation.
